Vibe Yellowfin 120 Angler Kayak Review

We recently took the Vibe Yellowfin 120 out for an extensive on-water evaluation. After spending considerable time with various angler kayaks, it was time to put the Yellowfin through its paces in real fishing conditions. Before heading to the launch point, we made minimal modifications, simply rigging up an anchor trolley system. The Yellowfin arrives impressively equipped straight from the factory, with mounting options for accessories already in place. When it comes to covering serious water while still maintaining excellent fishing capability, this twelve-foot platform delivers outstanding performance.
Challenging Weather Conditions
Weather patterns during our testing period proved challenging, with persistent low pressure systems bringing driving rain, building swells, and gusty crosswinds. While these conditions made fishing more demanding, they provided an excellent opportunity to evaluate how the kayak handles adverse situations. After approximately six hours on the water, we returned to find localized flooding throughout the area. Both paddlers emerged wet and cold, but the Yellowfin had demonstrated its capabilities under pressure.

Vibe Yellowfin 120 – The Complete Assessment
With footpegs positioned and the Hero seat dialed in, gear secured, we pushed off from shore. The Yellowfin 120 features Vibe's highly-regarded seating system that provides exceptional all-day comfort, and the adjustable footrests accommodate paddlers of varying heights with ease.

Before contemplating any fishing activity, we faced several miles of paddling to reach productive water. The Yellowfin 120 immediately revealed itself as an outstanding touring platform. The hull design delivers smooth, efficient tracking while the robust construction instills confidence. Vibe has engineered this kayak with durability as a priority, using quality materials throughout that create a stiff, responsive feel underfoot.
The additional features add some weight, but the trade-off in functionality proves worthwhile. From the integrated wheel for transport to the well-designed hatch system, every component serves a purpose. The deck layout provides ample space for tackle management while keeping essential gear within arm's reach.

Stability & Comfort in Rough Conditions
The seated position places you within the kayak rather than perched atop it, creating exceptional stability even in choppy water. This lower center of gravity makes the Yellowfin remarkably forgiving when conditions deteriorate. The footpeg system works flawlessly, the seat back provides genuine support, and the Hero seat cushioning maintains comfort even through extended sessions on the water. After hours of paddling and fishing in demanding conditions, the ergonomic design continued to perform admirably.
Battling Wind Against Tide
Conditions restricted our fishing options, keeping us within the shelter of a nearby point. On the initial drift, we deployed weighted rigs and located structure approximately 150 yards out, identifying a rock formation rising from the bottom. The tide pushed over this feature creating an ideal ambush point for predatory fish.
Subsequent drifts produced excellent action. Light tackle in shallow water created explosive strikes, with fish displaying vibrant coloration indicating the proximity to structure. We managed roughly half a dozen quality drifts before deteriorating conditions forced a tactical retreat to more protected water.

Outstanding Fishing Platform
The Yellowfin 120 excels both on the drift and at anchor. When current pushed us along the coastline, anchoring became necessary to maintain position. The bottom fishing produced consistent action with various species coming to the boat, providing steady entertainment throughout the session.
The flush-mounted rod holders proved invaluable, and the integrated storage pockets kept essential tackle within easy reach. The ability to quickly adjust footpegs allowed for position changes that improved circulation during extended anchoring sessions, demonstrating the thoughtful design touches that separate quality fishing kayaks from the competition.

The return paddle covered approximately a mile and a half, running downwind through building chop. Some weather cocking occurred as expected with any kayak in strong wind conditions, but the Yellowfin remained manageable throughout. The bow design occasionally shipped water in the steeper waves, though by this point we were thoroughly soaked anyway. Paddling inevitably involves getting wet, and when fatigue sets in, the well-designed carry handles and integrated transport wheel proved their worth.

Final Verdict
The Vibe Yellowfin 120 would make an impressive addition to any angler's arsenal and looks fantastic whether on the water or mounted on roof racks. This kayak paddles beautifully and fishes even better. Despite challenging weather throughout our testing period, the Yellowfin consistently delivered satisfying performance. For paddlers seeking a capable twelve-foot fishing platform that balances speed, stability, and fishing functionality, the Yellowfin 120 stands as one of the finest options available.
