Outdoor Wood-Fired Pizza Oven
Follow along as we build a complete outdoor kitchen designed to support a heavy-duty wood-fired pizza oven. Scroll all the way down for our bonus cooking tips that take pizza night from good to unforgettable.
We built our first outdoor kitchen, garden, and farmhouse-style dining table to host backyard, farm-to-table meals with friends and family on our Seattle homestead. We finally wrapped the project just a week before we learned we were moving across the country.
That move ended up being the perfect excuse to do it all over again. With dreams of building another tiny house someday, designing a new outdoor cooking area felt like the right way to sharpen our woodworking chops and create a gathering spot we'd actually use every week.
Why We Love Wood-Fired Ovens
An outdoor kitchen on the homestead isn't just a luxury for us โ it's essential. Outdoor cooking has always been one of our favorite ways to slow down, gather, and eat well. Wood-fired cooking, in particular, is a beautiful step toward off-grid living and a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
And honestly, there's so much more to a wood-fired oven than pizza (although wood-fired pizza alone would be reason enough). Our oven back in Seattle pulled double-duty cooking steaks, baking homemade apple pies, breads, and cookies, roasting fish, charring veggies โ the list keeps going. Once you start cooking with live fire, it becomes the heart of every weekend.
Wood-fired ovens turn ordinary meals into memorable ones โ and they bring people outside, together, around real fire and real food.
The Best Structure for Outdoor Wood-Fired Ovens
An authentic wood-fired oven can weigh close to a ton, which means the structure underneath has to be seriously strong. A timber frame pergola turned out to be the perfect solution โ sturdy, beautiful, and built to last for decades of pizza nights and family dinners.
A friend with a sawmill helped us dimension rough-sawn sassafras lumber for the build, which gave the entire frame a warm, rustic character you simply can't get from store-bought boards.
Timber-frame construction is far more forgiving than fine furniture work, which makes it a great entry point if you've ever wanted to learn how to build sturdy, long-lived structures with relatively affordable materials.
This kind of project is also a hands-on introduction to traditional joinery โ mortise and tenon, half laps, drawbored and pegged joints. Even better, the tool list stays short. We cut and assembled the entire frame with just a few essentials:
- Circular saw
- Timber framing slick
- Lathe
Installing an Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven
Once the pergola was up, the next puzzle was figuring out how to move the nearly one-ton pizza oven off its shipping pallet and into position under the timber frame.
On our last install, our tractor barely had the muscle to lift the oven, and a good friend ended up trailering his bigger tractor over to bail us out. This time around, another friend came to the rescue with a skid steer and the kind of operator skill that makes heavy lifting look almost easy. With the right equipment, what could've been a stressful day became a smooth, satisfying install.
Solid Footing
Level your slab or platform before delivery day โ a one-ton oven is unforgiving of uneven surfaces.
Right Equipment
A skid steer or compact loader makes installation safer, faster, and far less stressful than improvising.
Cure Slowly
Break in your oven with small, gradual fires over several days to avoid cracking the dome.
