  The key difference to a Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel compared to a Stainless Steel of a 304 grade is the corrosion resistance against chlorides and acids. This is achieved by adding  2-3% molybdenum to the content of the alloy. 

Sodium chloride (NaCl), is what is known as commonly known as salt.  The salt in the ocean is also Sodium Chloride and often carries various trace minerals.

Long Story Short...316 Grade Stainless offers a much higher level of resistance against corrosion of a 304 Stainless in an outdoor and coastal environment from saltwater.
