Durston 1039 Agile C165mm Combo Rolling Mill With Reduction Gear - 128.121C165

The Durston Agile C165mm Combination Rolling Mill brings serious capacity to the bench in a thoughtfully streamlined package. At 165 mm wide, this mill handles both sheet and wire reduction with ease, featuring a combination roller design that includes flat sheet surfaces, square wire grooves, and half-round profiles all in one unit.

In place of a heavy cast handwheel, the Agile line uses a traditional T-bar for roll opening adjustment — a

practical design choice that reduces weight and cost without compromising performance. Unlike the DRM line, this mill does not include outside half-round extension rollers. The rolls are induction hardened to 64 HRC to a depth of 6 mm, delivering long-term durability under demanding studio and production use. Bearings are self-lubricating and maintenance-free.

The heavy-duty 5-to-1 reduction gearbox is a standout feature, making it significantly easier to turn the rolls under load. Behind the gear cover, two specially formed gears contribute to exceptionally smooth rolling action. A protective guard surrounds the top gears for added safety during operation.

The wire grooves in this mill use what Durston calls a traditional wire groove — a six-sided irregular hexagon profile (sometimes called a diamond or square groove) that is structurally strong, straightforward to produce, and compatible with a wide range of drawplate profiles. These grooves are designed for reducing wire diameter so you can produce various shaped wire profiles using drawplates and are generally not intended for producing finished product directly.

Maintenance Tips
  • Keep rollers clean & protected – Wipe the 165mm combination rollers after every use and apply a thin coat of light oil (e.g., 3-in-1) to prevent rust and surface damage.
  • Avoid touching roller surfaces – Oils and acids from hands can cause corrosion and marking on the induction-hardened (64 RC) rolls.
  • Use proper lubrication on gears – Apply standard gear grease (lithium-based preferred) to maintain smooth operation of the 5:1 reduction gearbox, ensuring effortless rolling.
  • Do not overload capacity – Stay within ~6mm sheet and ~8mm wire limits to prevent strain on the gearbox and roller misalignment.
  • Keep material clean & dry – Always roll clean, dry, annealed metal to avoid roller contamination and uneven results.
  • Check roller alignment regularly – Ensure even contact across the full 165mm width to maintain precision and avoid long-term wear issues.
  • Cover when not in use – Protect from dust and humidity; covered storage prevents rust and contamination buildup on the rolls.
  • Secure mounting for stability – Bolt the mill to a solid bench or stand to handle its heavy-duty load (~40kg+) and reduce vibration.
  • Clean grooves & half-rounds – Keep the 11 square grooves and half-round channels debris-free for consistent wire shaping and professional results.
