Durston 1045 DRM-Round150RE Rolling Mill with Reduction Gear & Extension Rolls - 128.144

Durston is the first manufacturer to offer a rolling mill with full round wire rolls, making it possible to produce true round wire with few — or in many cases, no — passes through a draw plate. Traditional wire rolling mills form wire in a diamond or triangular profile, requiring additional draw plate work to achieve a round cross-section. The DRM-Round150RE changes that: its full half-round groove geometry produces genuinely round wire directly off the mill. A slight flash may occur at the seam between the two half-round shapes, and a single pass through a round draw plate will clean that up, but for many applications the wire comes off the mill ready to use.

The 150mm roller length and 5-to-1 reduction gearbox make significant wire size reductions far easier, reducing operator effort and delivering consistent, repeatable results. Eighteen round wire grooves ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm cover the most common jewelry wire sizes. The integrated side extension rolls provide four half-round shank profiles — 4 mm, 3 mm, 2 mm, and 1.5 mm — for rolling half-round shanks without a separate tool setup.

Self-lubricating, maintenance-free bearings keep the mill running smoothly over years of heavy use. Hardened helical drive gears with a special tooth form deliver maximum drive efficiency and long service life. Calibrated dials on both top wheels with pointer indicators allow precise, easy-to-read gap measurement for accurate, repeatable reductions.

Durston rolling mills are widely recognized for holding their value better than virtually any other jewelry tool investment. Made in Great Britain.

What our Experts Think
  • Specialized Round Wire Production Mill
The Durston 1045 DRM Round 150RE is purpose-built for creating true round wire profiles directly from 1–10mm stock, reducing the need for extensive drawplate work in jewellery manufacturing.
  • Heavy-Duty 150mm Industrial Rolling Capacity
Features a 150mm roller length with a wide working area designed for larger batch production and consistent wire shaping across multiple passes.
  • 18 Precision Round Grooves for Wire Forming
Includes 18 graduated circular grooves, enabling progressive reduction and shaping of wire with improved control and repeatability.
  • 5:1 Gear Reduction for Controlled Power
Built-in gearbox reduces manual effort while maintaining smooth, steady rolling—especially useful when working with harder metals or thicker wire stock.
  • Extension Rolls for Profile Versatility
Integrated side extensions allow rolling of half-round and shallow profiles, expanding its functionality beyond pure round wire production.
  • Industrial Cast Iron Durston Build
One-piece cast iron frame ensures maximum rigidity and vibration resistance, supporting long-term precision in demanding workshop environments.
  • Workshop Efficiency Upgrade for Wire Makers
Ideal for goldsmiths and production studios focused on consistent wire output, reduced finishing steps, and high-volume repeatability.

Q&A

Q: What is the Durston 1045 DRM Round 150RE Rolling Mill (128.144)?
A: It is a professional manual round combination rolling mill designed for jewelry making, used to produce round wire shapes, sheet reduction, and profile forming in one machine.

Q: What is it used for?
A: It is used to reduce metal thickness, shape wire into round profiles, and create consistent wire forms for goldsmithing, silversmithing, and jewelry production.

Q: What materials can it work with?
A: It is suitable for gold, silver, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metals commonly used in jewelry fabrication.

Q: Is it manual or powered?
A: It is a manual rolling mill, but the gearbox reduces effort significantly for smoother operation.

Q: What is the main benefit of this model?
A: It allows jewellers to produce round wire directly through rolling (instead of only reducing wire), improving efficiency and reducing the need for drawplates in many workflows.

Q: What makes it different from standard rolling mills?
A: Unlike typical combination mills, it is specifically designed for round wire forming as a primary output, making it more specialized for wire production alongside sheet rolling.

Maintenance Tips
  • Clean grooves after every use – Remove metal dust from all 18 round forming grooves (1–10mm) to prevent scoring, uneven wire shaping, and buildup inside precision channels.
  • Light oil protection on idle – Apply a thin anti-rust oil layer on rollers and exposed steel when not in use; always wipe completely before rolling to avoid contaminating wire.
  • Maintain gearbox (5:1 reduction) – The gearbox reduces effort significantly but still benefits from periodic light lithium grease to keep torque smooth and consistent under load.
  • Prevent finning issues with proper technique – Rotate wire 90° between passes and adjust roll pressure slightly open/close to reduce side fins and improve roundness.
  • Use only clean, annealed wire – Dirty or work-hardened metal increases groove wear and reduces accuracy of round forming.
  • Check alignment regularly – Ensure even pressure across the full 150mm roller length to maintain consistent groove depth and avoid uneven deformation.
  • Secure mounting is essential – Bolt firmly to a rigid bench or stand; cast iron frame depends on stability for precision rolling.
  • Store in dry conditions – Protect rollers and bearings from humidity to prevent corrosion and maintain smooth operation.
  • Avoid forcing heavy reductions – Do not exceed recommended wire capacity (~10mm) and reduce gradually to extend roller life.
  • Never touch grooves with bare hands – Skin oils can cause long-term spotting on hardened steel and affect finish quality.
