Durston 1036 Olivia F130 Flat Rolling Mill With 50-1 Reduction Gear - 128.175

The Durston Olivia F130 Rolling Mill is a revolutionary machine designed to make hand rolling accessible to everyone. Powered by a 50-to-1 reduction gearbox and a large flywheel, the Olivia allows jewelers and metalsmiths to roll metal with minimal effort — including those who find traditional rolling mills difficult to operate due to limited strength or mobility. The front-facing wheel and compact footprint mean you can mount the Olivia beside your bench and work comfortably while seated.

This is the full flat Olivia, Durston model 1036, featuring a 130mm flat roll and four half-round sizes on the extension rolls. The side extension rolls allow straightforward rolling of half-round shanks in 4, 3, 2, and 1.5mm sizes. Whether you are doing reduction work on sheet metal or forming wire profiles, the Olivia's super-easy gear ratio makes precise, consistent rolling achievable for any skill level.

Like all Durston mills, the Olivia features self-lubricating, maintenance-free bearings and hardened helical drive gears with a special form engineered for maximum drive efficiency. A calibrated dial with pointer on both top wheels provides precise, easy-to-read gap measurement. The Olivia can be mounted on a sturdy benchtop or on either the Durston pedestal stand or Durston cabinet stand (sold separately).

Durston rolling mills are renowned for holding their value better than virtually any other tool in the jeweler's studio.

What our Experts Think
  • Revolutionary ease-of-use design: The Durston 1036 Olivia F130 (128.175) introduces a patent-pending 50:1 reduction gearbox, making rolling dramatically easier even for low-effort or seated operation.
  • Built for effortless control: The ultra-high reduction ratio allows smooth sheet reduction with minimal physical strain, ideal for extended studio sessions and precision work.
  • Full 130mm flat rolling surface: Designed exclusively for flat sheet work (plus side half-round extension options), ensuring consistent, clean reduction across wider metal stock.
  • Accessibility-focused performance: Engineered for users who need improved ergonomics—supporting seated operation and reduced fatigue without sacrificing industrial durability.
  • Professional-grade build quality: Cast body construction with induction-hardened rolls and precision calibration ensures long-term reliability and workshop consistency.
  • Studio productivity upgrade: The extreme gear reduction improves control over fine adjustments, making it especially valuable for delicate rolling, texture prep, and repeatable sheet thinning workflows.

Q&A

Q: What is the Durston Olivia F130 Rolling Mill used for?
A: It is a professional flat sheet rolling mill designed for reducing metal thickness, flattening sheet, and improving metal density for jewelry and metalworking applications.

Q: What makes this model unique?
A: It features a patented 50:1 ultra-high reduction gearbox, making it one of the easiest manual rolling mills to operate with minimal physical effort.

Q: What type of rolling does it support?
A: It is a flat-only mill, meaning it is designed for sheet metal work and also supports half-round wire forming via side extension rolls.

Q: What is the roller size?
A: It has 130mm wide flat rollers with a 60mm roller diameter, optimized for smooth, even sheet reduction.

Q: What is the maximum material thickness it can handle?
A: It can roll sheet metal up to approximately 6mm thickness, depending on material hardness.

Q: Does it include wire forming options?
A: Yes, it includes side extension rollers with 4 half-round profiles (4mm, 3mm, 2mm, and 1.5mm) for basic wire shaping.

Q: What makes the 50:1 gearbox important?
A: The extreme reduction ratio means 50 handle turns equal 1 full roller rotation, drastically reducing effort and making it suitable for users who need low-force operation.

Q: Is it suitable for professional use?
A: Yes, it is built with solid cast construction, induction-hardened rolls, and precision adjustment, making it a high-end professional workshop tool.

Q: Who is this rolling mill best suited for?
A: It is ideal for jewelers, metal artists, and users who prioritize ease of use, precision, and reduced physical strain.

Q: What makes this model stand out overall?
A: Its defining feature is the 50:1 gearbox system, which delivers unmatched ease of rolling compared to standard manual mills, especially for heavy sheet reduction work.

Maintenance Tips
  • Clean rollers after every use: Remove metal dust from the 130mm flat rolls and side extensions to prevent surface marking and maintain precision.
  • Protect induction-hardened rolls: Apply a thin coat of anti-rust oil when idle, then wipe clean before use to avoid contamination and corrosion.
  • Care for 50:1 gearbox: Keep gears lightly greased (lithium-based grease recommended) and ensure smooth, consistent rotation without forcing the handle.
  • Use gradual reductions: The high-torque system works best with light, staged passes to protect gears and maintain alignment.
  • Keep extension grooves clean: Regularly clear 4, 3, 2, 1.5 mm half-round channels to ensure accurate wire and shank forming.
  • Check roller alignment: Ensure consistent parallel adjustment for even sheet thickness and smooth rolling performance.
  • Avoid dirty or hardened metal: Only roll clean, annealed material to prevent damage to rolls and gearbox stress.
  • Store in dry conditions: Cover when not in use and protect from humidity to prevent rust on cast body and steel components.
