Rinse After Each Dive: Rinse the entire BCD, including the bladder, inflator, and rip cord system, with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and chlorine. Be sure to rinse the inside of the bladder by inflating and deflating it with clean water.
Flush the Bladder: Fill the bladder with clean water, swish it around, and drain completely. Inflate and deflate the bladder a few times to help remove any remaining debris.
Inspect the Rip Cord System: Ensure the rip cord system is functioning smoothly. Check that the rip cord is free of obstructions, properly seated, and ready for use. Test it periodically to make sure it deploys correctly.
Check for Leaks: Inflate the BCD fully and listen for any leaks. If you notice any, inspect the bladder, dump valves, and inflator for damage, and replace any worn or damaged parts.
Lubricate Valves: Apply silicone-based lubricant to the inflator and dump valve mechanisms for smooth operation. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as they can degrade the rubber components.
Dry and Store Properly: Hang the BCD in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry completely. Make sure the bladder and all parts are fully dry before storing to avoid mold and mildew. Avoid storing it in direct sunlight or extreme heat.
Store with Care: Store the BCD partially inflated in a cool, dry place to maintain its shape. Avoid folding or compressing the BCD tightly.
Annual Service: Have the BCD, rip cord system, and inflator serviced annually by a certified technician to ensure everything is in optimal working condition.
