Rinse After Each Dive: Rinse both the BC/BCD and regulator with fresh water after each dive. Pay attention to the bladder, inflator, and dump valves on the BC, as well as the regulator's first and second stages. Use low-pressure water and avoid immersing the regulator in water.
Flush the Bladder: Fill the BC bladder with fresh water, swish it around, and drain it completely. Inflate and deflate the bladder a few times to ensure all contaminants are flushed out.
Inspect the Rip Cord System: Regularly check the rip cord system for any obstructions or damage. Test the mechanism to ensure it deploys properly in an emergency situation.
Check for Leaks: Inflate the BC fully and listen for any air leaks. Check the bladder, inflator valve, dump valves, and O-rings for signs of wear or damage. Replace any damaged components immediately.
Lubricate the Valves: Apply silicone-based lubricant to the inflator and dump valve mechanisms to maintain smooth function. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as they can degrade rubber components.
Regulator Care: After each dive, rinse the regulator with fresh water, making sure to keep the first stage dry. After rinsing, store the regulator in a dry, cool area. Have the regulator inspected and serviced annually by a certified technician to ensure it’s functioning properly.
Dry and Store Properly: Hang the BC in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry completely. Make sure the bladder and valves are fully dry before storing it to prevent mold or mildew buildup. Store the BC partially inflated to help maintain its shape.
Store with Care: Store the BC/BCD in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. Avoid folding or compressing the BC, as this can damage the bladder.
Annual Service: Have the BC and regulator system serviced by a professional annually to ensure optimal performance and safety. This includes inspecting the rip cord, inflator, valves, and regulator components.
